BREAKING UPDATE: John King: "Barack Obama Offered Nomination to Joe Biden"

UPDATE: John King is now swearing on his sources that Obama has offered the VP slot to Biden. King said "this is incredibly sensitive" and acknowledged that the source was not supposed to reveal the information. John King can suck a fat one.

From The Page:

ABC: SECRET SERVICE HEADED TO BIDEN'S

Friday, August 22nd,

The network says a protective detail has been dispatched to the Senator's Delaware home- "indicating in all likelihood that Biden has been officially notified that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, has selected him to be his running mate."

My thoughts exactly.

If it wasn't to be Wes or Hillary, I am SOOOO glad it's not Bayh.

Joe, I can live with.

Evan, CG, I would have been hic-uping with you.

Re: hiccup. (2.00 / 5)

Bayh certainly wasn't my top pick. But, really, folks, this election is about whether a Democrat or Republican is president. Any Democrat is better than any Democrat.

Would it be nice if I could vote for a candidate who agreed with me on every possible issue? Well, sure, but this is the real world and that's never going to happen.  We all have to make a choice and anyone who won't vote for a Democrat over a Republican doesn't care about moving this country away from Republican principles.

Oh I would have gladly voted for obama regardless of who he picked as long as they were a democrat.  I am not a purity person like most on our side.  I would have done the same volunteer work/donations for Hillary had she won.  Hell, if Mike Gravel would have won I would have been out there proclaiming that he is just as crazy and cooky as McRusty, but at least he's our crazy cook.

I forgot to add that I am getting up at the crack of dawn to head to springfield to hear Obama and his VP (Biden) speak.  I was there when he first announced so it seems fitting that I go this time as well.

Re: Whether this person is a troll or not (2.00 / 1)

Hi Blazer,

I know Catfish from WAY back....I know she is not a troll

And, to answer your question, I'm not sure HOW he could have handled it much better.

In truth, if he eliminated her early on, you folks would have been just as mad IMHO.

NONE OF US KNOW how the mechanics of this went down, who was notified when and why...

I am NOT buying the "she was never vetted" story, but, in truth, messages might have been passed back and forth, that maybe she was NOT that interested.

We just don't know, might never know.

There might have been such bad blood, even between the teams, that the deal could never
have been made?

And, I'm not pointing fingers, it could have been the Obama team that was too angry?

None of us know?

Look, I have been saying for DAYS there are going to be hundreds of thousands of unhappy Clinton supporters if this didn't go their way.

I really am not sure HOW this could have made the blow any easier.

Look, I am not thrilled either, Wes or Hillary, I would be much happier.

But, I can live with Joe, happy it's not Keane or Bayh.

Yet, I know, there is an ugly kickback coming from people I can really sympathise with.

WSB, Biden is cool by my book (none / 0)

The primary concern I have with him is the same concern I would have with HRC and that is, Biden went right after Obama's readiness on tape.  He went further than she did and effectively stated Obama wasn't ready to be president.

Biden still has the best one-liner of the 2008 presidential campaign; no one is beating that one.  It's too bad Limbaugh and company pushed McCain away from choosing a pro-choicer, we could have had Joe v. Rudy in a VP debate.

It'll be sad to lose Jeralyn's support (none / 0)

from talkleft.  She and Jerome (though he'll take a hit for his Daschle and Kerry predictions) are my two favorite front pagers in the blogosphere.  Biden has a pretty bad record when it comes to criminal defendant rights but then again, this is another subject area where the party is divided.

The guy will be a breath of fresh air on the trail at least.  Biden should be able to beat whatever scrub McCain recruits in that debate.  However, is Biden going to simply walk back from the previous comments he made about Obama's readiness and other issues?

PM, I was talking about Jeralyn (2.00 / 0)

My sense from reading her posts about Biden is that McCain and Biden are indistinguishable when it comes to the rights of criminal defendants.  The party is divided on that issue anyway.

I am on board with whoever though I'm in the minority who would have preferred Bayh over Biden though I like Biden's style more.  Those statements are going to be as difficult to get around as they would have been for HRC.  He affirmed unequivocally to Boy George that Obama wasn't ready.

Re: It'll be sad to lose Jeralyn's support (2.00 / 1)

I hear what you are saying, but wouldn't Hillary have had to do the same thing in regards to walking back comments as Biden?  I am not an anti Hillary guy, but I guess I am more interested in a respected figure like Biden pounding away at the republicans from here until November.  Not saying that Hillary isn't a force to be reckoned with, but I just prefer Biden's style at this point in time.

Biden comes off as a elitist and a boring speaker. Its going to be awful seeing him in swing states. He may have come from a working class background but he is from Delaware with no base in the rest of the country and he looks like a diplomat. Dukakis/Bentsen 08? Obama/Biden 08?

I think he's a pretty damned good speaker. (2.00 / 1)

But especially on television, in interviews--something Obama's not exceptional at doing.  Biden's all gut.  And I've seen him give some boring speeches, but I've also seen some stemwinders.

Check him out on Letterman.  He was pretty damned good.  A guy's guy.  Bayh would have seemed elitist.  Not Biden.  Beltway, yes.  Not upper-class arugula material though.

Re: BREAKING: Secret Service Dispatched to Biden's (2.00 / 1)

I have never found Biden to be particularly bright or insightful.  He reminds me a great deal of so many of the Cold-War-type Democrats.  I'm not sure why he was picked.  I have no idea what he adds to the ticket, none at all.  I've supported Obama from the beginning but I am not terribly happy with this, if indeed he is the choice.

It seems to me that a populist with strong economic (or even a military figure with that kind of experience), or someone from a state that we need a boost in, would have been a better choice.

Oh well.

by mady on Fri Aug 22, 2008 at 11:42:55 PM EST

You know, you've got a point (none / 0)

Maybe he reminds you of the Cold War Democrats 'cause he is one...and that could be one of his greatest assets. It's the Cold War mentality that Sen. Obama will be up against in the general election. Sen. Biden makes a most execellent "sparring partner."

Re: BREAKING: Secret Service Dispatched to Biden's (1.00 / 1)

No objections here (just don't try to play stuff down and start the incessant insults and rants if everyone does not agree right away) and the only thing Obama needs to do once it is offical is make sure he is seen, SEEN as calling the shots. He and Biden need to work very hard to not give the impression BHO is leaning on him or that he is not in charge. Just IMHO anyway. It would be easy for repukes to start a nasty nasty meme...
